Ed Fox has broad interests, especially related to information, going back to his 1972 MIT BS thesis on information retrieval, supervised by Mike Kessler (who discovered bibliographic coupling); his undergraduate advisor was JCR Licklider, author of the 1965 MIT Press book "Libraries of the Future". His graduate advisor at Cornell was Gerry Salton, "the father of information retrieval".

Ed has been at Virginia Tech since 1983. He has been very active in education, scholarship (over 700 publications or presentations), and service (including over 200 conferences or workshops).

Ed began working on ETDs in 1987. He has been a (co-)principal investigator on almost 100 research grants, related to CD-ROM, electronic publishing, searching, text analysis and classification, multimedia systems, educational technologies, digital libraries, etc.
